Post punk/rock n rollers give us The Rafters........

Hi Nathan, thanks for the interview mate, can you tell us about your musical background, how you all met and describe your sound? We have all been on the music scene and in bands for the past 10 years. I (Nat) was in a young mod band called The Shade with drummer josh. I’d always know about Raz, who is the bass player, as he’d been in a fairly successful punk band (Middle Finger Salute). I’d admired his playing from a far! And Joe, who’s the guitarist, was jamming with Josh and spotted his talent. I’d orchestrated us all to meet and before you know it.... the super group was formed! We’ve experienced minor success in music in different ways but nothing major! This is the most promising project I think we’ve all been involved with and we are extremely excited to see what the future holds. We’re experienced enough not to be deluded about how hard it is to break through. However, with the songs in our arsenal, I believe we have a real shot at making our mark on the wider music scene!

Who has influenced you most in music and what are your most treasured records? For me, my dad. He was in a band called the Itch who had a record deal and I grew up with the whole band thing around me. That had a huge impact on me musically. I was sat watching the band practice most Saturday’s from the age of 8. My most treasured record..... hmmmm it changes on a day to day but on this fine, sunny winters morning, I’d say ‘Singles going steady’ by the Buzzcocks. I made a big impact on me when I was a teenager. Mermaid Avenue by Billy Bragg and Wilco has always resonated with me. Lyrically, I was fascinated with the writings of Woody Guthrie. A good Sunday album.

Do you follow the current music scene? Yeah! There is some decent young bands out. I’m into The Lathums and Fontaines DC at the moment. Locally, there’s not much going on around here. We know that Alan McGee signed a few bands and even signed a local band last year! I hope that there are still music venues open when this is all over. That’s something that worries me! Live music is everything!

Has lockdown affected your creativity? Not really. I wasn’t using this time to write songs and be all like (posh voice)‘I’m using this time to tap into my creative mind’. I’ve tried not to dedicate time for songwriting and more just let it happen. I have written a lot of material in this period. I keep my guitar in sight at all times and pick it up throughout the day. I’ve worked from home quite a lot through lockdown so it’s been a blessing to have something to focus on.

Where can folks get to listen to your music?
