Oscar Quick talks about his music.....

Oscar Quick kindly allowed me to start writing for his music blog over a year ago and I was always struck by his love to help promote others and their music. Thankfully I can return his act of kindness and I interviewed him about his music.........

Although I have heard your music before Oscar, can you tell us about your musical background, how you got into music and describe your sound?

Well I first got into music rather embarrassingly through the whole emo scene back in the early 2010’s. Becoming a teenager and hearing black veil brides for the first time all in the space of a couple of months tends to leave one with ripped jeans and wristbands. But at some point I discovered that BVB were massively influenced by a band called Metallica. I heard enter sandman and that was it for me. I picked up bass not long after, enrolled in a music GCSE and begun my journey to where I am now. I went through so many phases. Metallica and Megadeth, the whole thrash metal thing was where I started, but then I discovered nirvana and was quite pleased to realise I could actually play those songs, unlike the metal music I had been previously struggling with. Nirvana led me to grunge and eventually to a live concert of British punk duo Slaves. They opened my mind in ways I cannot express and from there I discovered punk and indie music. Now I listen to everything from Motown to Metal and back again, hell my uni band even did a thrash version of a temptations track! My sound is distilled from so many genres and bands but the two biggest influences have to be The Cure and Joy Division. I discovered 80’s goth around 17 or so and the style has been a staple in my sound ever since. Something about big reverb and dark lyrics spoke to me. So to sum up my style is a combination of 80’s goth, punk and electronic influences, all with my signature spoken word vocals.

Who has influenced you most in music and what are your most treasured records?

My biggest influence in music has to be my Father. He was playing in bands while I was in nappies and is my biggest musical confidant. He got me playing bass and introduced me to so many bands. My most treasured records have to be The Physical World from Death From Above 1979, my entire collection of Gaffa Tape Sandy records and my latest addition, the Love Will Tear Us Apart single from Joy Division.

I know you have your own music blog; can you tell the readers about it and who are the artists you are currently most excited about?

Needs More Cowbell is a blog, a youtube channel, a community and the home for all those who are interested in me and my musical journey. I provide music reviews, video essays, my own music and of course memes! Needs More Cowbell is my future and hopefully one day, my career. I’m not sure how big I will get, but this is something I will never give up. Lately I have been listening to King Gizzard and the lizard wizard. An amazing blast of microtonal madness. Highly recommended.

How has lockdown affected your creativity?

Lockdown initially was very tough on the creativity front, I had recorded my EP in the few weeks before the first lockdown and found myself rather burnt out. But after the great reception from the release a few months later I felt so much better about it and begun working on more music. I have since released two more singles, Cans Of Soup and my latest endeavour I Should Sleep

I understand you are working on a new release, can you tell us the idea or theme behind the project and when it will be out? Also, who worked with you on the project?

My latest release, I Should Sleep is available on all major streaming platforms (Or rather will be within the week, if you want to listen now head over to the Needs More Cowbell youtube channel) it was written during a manic episode I had at 2am. It is a very raw expression of my brain sleep deprived brain filled full of my love for my favourite artists. This project musically is the result of myself writing and playing the instruments with my producer Vojtech Podolsky helping me bring the track to life.

Where can folks get to listen to your music?
