The Nottingham folk scene is still healthy and lockdown has not silenced them. New releases come from Paul Carbuncle and Pixie Styx in recent weeks to keep the scene alive and both available on CD. Folk Punk or Punk Folk, either way these two artists are Punky in a Folk way and Folky in a Punk way and these home produced releases show us what talented folks and punks they are.
Paul Carbuncle gives us 'Monkfish Mix-Up At Farmers' Market' and a collection of 20 songs on the Lousy Hops Records. Songs about everyday folks (or punks) and their lives/livelihoods, folks (punks) who are from the life of hard knocks and Paul sings about the Fisherman, the Fireman and the drunken Huntsmen, his stories are about ruthless coppers, romantic gypsies and broken soldiers. Listen for free but spend a little and buy the CD.......
Pixie Styx has developed her musical skills to include thorough historical investigations into her family members and then write detailed and personal stories about their lives. And so that is what I expected in this debut album.......however the material is very different and she sings with an almost Bluesy Soul voice about more personal material that is almost Pop sounding at times. Tracks like 'Crush On My Teacher' and 'Damp Patch' have a wonderful naive sound that left me wanting her to write more songs in this style. Buy her CD and her merch at.....
